When a former classmate reached out a few months ago asking for help shaping her ideas into a thought leadership deck for an upcoming speaking engagement, I volunteered for reasons that were only partly altruistic. I'd been searching for a genuinely reliable AI presentation tool for most of the past year, and a timeline that gave me room to experiment felt like a more honest test than anything I'd been able to construct on my own.
She had the substance, the expertise, and a well-developed point of view on her subject. What she was short on was time and the kind of design support that turns a strong argument into a deck that doesn't embarrass the argument.
The Backstory: A Graveyard of Almost-Good Decks
If you've been following this newsletter, you already know the Gamma story, but the short version is that I asked it to build a few simple slides (a book cover, an author name, a quote) and received in return something that looked polished right up until you actually read the words, at which point the fabrications became impossible to miss. The quotes were invented, the details were wrong, and none of it came with any acknowledgment that something might be off.
What followed was months of running variations of the same basic task across different tools, and I kept arriving at the same fork in the road. On one side were tools that produced visually compelling slides filled with confidently wrong or placeholder content, FPO material dressed up as finished work with no signal to the user that the underlying substance was invented. On the other side were tools that could give you every word you needed, but when it came to showing you what the slide would actually look like, they'd render the layout directly in the chat window using brackets and pipes and dashes arranged into something that was technically a visual in the same way that a dot-matrix printer technically produced graphics. You knew what it was trying to be. That wasn't the same as it being useful.

The formatting failures that accumulated across those sessions were rarely dramatic in isolation. A title spilling past its text box, fonts shifting mid-deck for no discernible reason, a table that had somehow decided the edge of a slide was a suggestion rather than a boundary. Each one took maybe thirty seconds to fix, but there were always more of them, and correcting one had a frustrating tendency to introduce another.
The problems that drive you crazy in presentation work aren't the big ones. They're the dozens of small things that each take thirty seconds to fix, and there are always more of them.
What Changed This Time
I used Claude's PowerPoint add-in to build the deck for my classmate's talk. It is a native Microsoft integration that lives directly in your PowerPoint ribbon, not a separate automation tool. It launched as a research preview on February 5, 2026, and became available to all paid Claude plans on February 20th. Because it generates real, editable PowerPoint elements rather than static images, Claude can actually read back what it built and act on what it finds, and that capability is what makes the behavior I'm about to describe possible.
The build was substantial: multiple slides, a structured timeline, data tables, a content framework, a closing argument. The kind of project where formatting problems tend to compound rather than stay contained. After generating the initial deck, Claude used the tools available to it to open the file, inspect what it had made, and report back before I asked. It found four layout problems and fixed them:

There was also a moment worth noting on the content side, though it played out differently. When I looked at one of the slides, something felt off about two statistics that appeared there, so I asked directly whether the data had been sourced or was placeholder. Claude confirmed immediately that both figures were ones it had written to make the slide compelling rather than pulled from actual research. It named them, explained the problem clearly, and offered to run a web search and replace them with citable data. I took it up on that, and the real numbers turned out to be sharper than the invented ones anyway.
Claude didn't catch that one on its own. I had to notice something was off and ask the question directly. But when I did, it answered completely and without hedging, which matters because deflection and doubling down are far more common responses when you push on AI-generated content.
The Thing That Actually Changed
Here's my read on what's different, and why it matters beyond presentations specifically. The gap that's been closing isn't raw capability, since these models have been able to handle content work for a while. The gap has been execution awareness: whether the tool understands that its output exists in a real context with real constraints, and whether it has any mechanism to verify that before handing something over.

Almost every failure I've documented in this newsletter, the hallucinations, the formatting disasters, the last-mile problems where AI gets 99% right and then falls apart on practical utility, traces back to tools that have no feedback loop on their own outputs and no way of knowing whether what they produced actually works in the context it was built for. When a tool can check its own work, the entire experience shifts. It's not that errors disappear, but the ones that do make it through start to feel like honest mistakes rather than confident confabulations.
What I'm Still Watching
This experience was meaningfully better, not magically different, and that distinction matters because it's essentially the whole point of this newsletter. The strategic thinking, the audience judgment, the narrative craft are all still yours to bring, and Claude isn't going to tell you that your third slide undermines your fifth or that your framing will land wrong with a skeptical room. What changed is the mechanical layer, the part where things should just work and historically haven't, and the fact that it mostly did this time was enough to leave me with something I don't always come away from these experiments with, which is a little genuine optimism about where this is going.
